Efficiency and Collaboration

  • Use OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams for Discovery file management.
  • Login with M365 credentials
  • Edit, review and view projects
  • Save report to OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams
  • Include email or chat message
  • In-app commenting: @mention other collaborators "
  • A new extension builder can be used to create custom tools or workflows within Discovery driven by script New tools can be developed and tested within the extension builder before publishing to the ribbon This exciting new technology allows customization improvements to be shared throughout an engineering organization
  • Added a quick reference to new features to the Welcome screen and the Learn drop-down menu on the Home page.

Model Prep for Simulation: added functionality

  • New check geometry tool in the repair tab: Detected issues can be converted to selections for deeper investigation or attempts can be made to automatically repair the issues
  • Hiding faces no longer shows the outline of the hidden faces. This allows much easier investigations into the interior of a part or assembly. Faces can be hidden from the right mouse button context menu
  • New embedded notebook allows users to communicate design modifications or details to a wider group. Easily add dimensions, annotations or additional views to convey ideas. Notebooks can be exported to a pdf for sharing design information. Additional settings have been added for engineering notebook defaults
  • Replace and export components have been added to the context menu in the tree. Easily replace all components to a simpler version or an updated model from CAD. Break up a large model into manageable pieces to distribute a large workload
  • New option to use density attributes available when connected to a Mechanical optimization. Density attributes control the thickness of lattice elements throughout the part instead of using a constant thickness.
  • Drastically speedup the solidification time after topology optimization
  • Proportional edits in with subdivisional edits now walk along the selected geometry instead of using an absolute radius. This allows for more precise edits in areas of complex networks
  • A physics condition or setting change will not cause a mesh update. Condition values, simulation options, material assignments, etc. will not cause the mesh to regenerate if the mesh exists. Geometry and mesh setting changes will result in a mesh update. Improves workflow and performance for updating simulation results based on physics changes

Added Parameterization features

  • Wall thermal inputs, Remote point locations, Components for velocity and acceleration.
  • Parameters automatically created for all three components when a single component is parameterized.
  • Parameters chart can be displayed without Defined Variations table open
  • Parameters and Variations accessible from Ribbon.
  • Manage physics parameters
  • Quickly generate test cases
  • Physics condition opened when clicking on parameter in parameters table

Topology Optimization Enhancements

  • Find minimum acceptable mass without multiple optimizations at different volume constraints.
  • Factor of safety constraint enables assemblies with different materials to be optimized.
  • Perform multiple defined variations of topology optimization with different criteria, geometric parameters and/or test cases.
  • Automatic mesh refinement during topology optimization
Begins with a coarse resolution, then refines during optimization to reach the specified fidelity at convergence
    Improves performance.

FLUIDS

The LiveGX GPU Solver from Fluent

  • is now default fluids solver in Refine (included with the Discovery Simulation license) and provides fast and accurate solutions

New Polyhedral Meshing (Refine) for fluids

  • powered by Fluent watertight meshing
  • Available with either LiveGX or Fluent
  • Use Fidelity slider along with local and global fidelity controls
  • Improves mesh quality and reduces cell count to optimizes computing resources

New option to subtract overlapping parts during simulation without modifying original geometry

  • Significantly simplifies fluid volume extraction by no longer needing to include internal details
  • Use context menu in model tree to convert a body to a cutter body, removing material in overlapping regions
  • Cutter bodies can be included as solids for CHT

New intake and exhaust fan conditions

  • Specify fan curve based on volume flow rate or velocity versus pressure or constant pressure rise
  • Fan library with common electronics cooling fans
  • Based on Icepak fan library with ability to add user-defined fans
  • Ability to filter fan selection based on library, manufacturer, or fan area
  • Fan operating pressure monitor
  • Determines if fan is operating in the stable portion of the fan performance curve

Rotating Frame of Reference:

  • Cylinders, cones, stacked cylinders and stacked cylinders and cones supported for rotating fluid zones
  • Enables many different types of centrifugal pumps and blowers to be simulated
  • Less restrictive tolerance for coaxial geometry
  • Easier to define rotating fluid zones with imprecise imported geometry

Electromagnetics

  • Automatically generates local fidelities for antenna geometry for any metallic component touching a port
  • Size Preview available for electromagnetic simulation including generated local fidelities

Notes on installation and licensing for Ansys product updates

Installation instructions

NOTES ON INSTALLATION

Since Microsoft has officially terminated the maintenance of Windows 7 as of 14 January 2020, Windows 7 is also no longer supported by Ansys. For security reasons alone, an update to Windows 10 is recommended.

The software can be downloaded as usual via the Ansys Customer Portal:
Software Download

For new customers, a user login is required before downloading. For this registration the current customer number is required.

To download the Ansys software, we recommend downloading the ISO images. With this download option, you will receive all data and do not have to assemble single modules to an installation archive. It is not necessary to burn a DVD, because the downloaded ISO images can also be unpacked with appropriate tools like 7-Zip (please use the latest version!) or WinRAR. Please do NOT use the Windows own Zip Utility or WinZip, because they might not unpack the images without errors. The individual ISO images must always be unpacked into their own folders to avoid overwriting files with the same name.
