Since 1926, MR, the abbreviation for Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen, has been a household name among transformer manufacturers and operators, associated with safety and reliability as well as with the long service life of on-load tap-changers. The validation of screw connections according to VDI 2230 is obligatory and was automated with the support of CADFEM.

Task

CADFEM was commissioned to generate an automated calculation for screw connections according to VDI 2230 with Ansys Workbench, which especially considers the creep behavior of plastic components.

Solution

The basis of the calculations is a parametric 3D model, which is generated in the CAD system via an MS Excel table and transferred to Ansys. The users simply enter the parameters into a mask and the FEM calculation is generated for them.

With the automation project, the time required by the employees to execute the Ansys calculation was reduced to about one third. Knowing about the creep behaviour simplifies the optimisation of the screw connections with plastic parts. In addition, the spring effect can now also be mapped automatically.

Task

Since 1926, MR, the abbreviation for Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen, has been a household name among transformer manufacturers and operators, associated with safety and reliability as well as with the long service life of on-load tap-changers. These are used to adapt the transmission ratio of the primary to secondary winding to changing load conditions in order to ensure a trouble-free power supply. For the automated validation of screw connections according to VDI 2230, especially the behaviour of plastic components, analytical software should be supplemented by Ansys Workbench.


Customer Benefit

With the automation project, the time required by the employees for the Ansys calculation was reduced to about one third. The systematic insight into the results and the variation of the analyses provide the designers with a better understanding of how bolted joints behave in different load situations. The knowledge about the creep behavior simplifies the optimization of bolted connections with plastic parts, e.g. to reduce sizes. In addition, the spring effect within a bolted connection can now also be realistically mapped automatically.


Solution

For the automation, it was determined how the CAD model should be simplified, how it should be networked, and which standard values should be used for the calculation, so that only a few manual entries are necessary. The basis for the calculations is a parametric 3D model, which is generated in the CAD system via an MS Excel table and transferred to Ansys. Since, in addition to the surface pressure due to the bolt pre-stress, long-term effects such as the creep of the plastics are also taken into account within the Ansys calculation, the necessary parameters must also be entered by the user. Basically, the automated simulation was designed in such a way that it can also be easily operated by designers without FEM experience.
