Static Calculations of Watch Components with Ansys Mechanical

Designing parts of watches using the finite element method

Overview

Training Advanced

Learn how to use Ansys Mechanical's advanced options for the watchmaking industry and application to watch part examples. This training is offered as a 2-day course.

Duration
2 days

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Ansys Mechanical

Software used
Ansys Mechanical

Benefits
  • Being able to simulate on one’s own watch assemblies
  • Mastering the mesh: mesh evaluation and improvement
  • Ensuring convergence of non-linear models
  • Evaluating results and identifying required changes

Description

You want to know whether your watch mechanism is correctly dimensioned? Ansys Workbench allows you to check the integrity of the parts as well as to calculate the forces and torques acting in your mechanisms, and this directly at the design stage. During this training course, you will simulate about ten watch parts such as a spring, a jumper, a split-time counter mechanism or a balance-spring. You will carry out static analyses of 2D and 3D assemblies, considering friction between the parts and large displacements. The theoretical background required for advanced contact management and to allow the convergence of non-linear models will be detailed, discussed and applied during the exercises.

Detailed agenda for this 2-day training

Day 1

01 Simulating watch springs with Ansys Mechanical

  • Refresher for static mechanical simulation with Ansys Mechanical
  • Evaluation of the mesh and results
  • Workshop caliber spring: Stress calculation of the pre-loaded and fully loaded spring

02 Simulation and geometrical considerations

  • Modification of the geometry
  • Export of the deformed geometry
  • Workshop lever: Stress assessment of the preloaded spring and the torque acting on the lever

03 Shock study

  • Implementing acceleration
  • Workshop balance bridge: Calculation of stresses and displacements in the bridge, the Kif spring and the balance under the effect of a 5000 g acceleration

04 Contact management and convergence

  • Advanced contact management
  • Convergence of non-linear models
  • Evaluation of contact-related results
  • Workshop date mechanism: Stress assessment of the date spring and calculation of the torque acting on the date wheel

Day 2

05 Simulation of a jumper

  • Summary of the simulation pieces of advice provided for watch components
  • Workshop jumper and wheel: Calculation of the stress in the preloaded spring and of the torque acting on the wheel

06 Study of joints and tightness

  • Calculating the assembly driving force and the tightness of seals (contact pressure)
  • Comparing standard fine mesh and adaptive meshing
  • Workshop: Glass assembly

07 Study of a fly back hand mechanism

  • Calculation of the stresses in the fly-back hand pliers and column wheel spring
  • Calculation of the torque required on the column wheel to spread the pliers' jaws apart

08 Simulation of balance springs

  • Workshop 1: Calculation of stress, angular rigidity and position of the center of gravity as a function of the rotation of a flat balance spring and of a Breguet balance spring
  • Workshop 2: Calculation of deformations and stresses in a balance spring at an acceleration of 100g

Do you have questions on the training?

When will I receive the final confirmation for my training booking?

Straight after you sign up, an automatic confirmation of receipt will be sent to the email addresses you provided. Once you have successfully verified the data you provided, you will receive your personalized sign-up confirmation, containing further information on course fees, the billing address, etc., by email within two to three working days.

As soon as the minimum number of attendees has been reached, you will receive a final training confirmation containing further information. If you have booked an on-site training, we recommend that you wait until you have received this final confirmation before booking your travel and accommodation.

If the minimum number of attendees is not reached, we reserve the right to cancel the training seven days before it is due to start at the latest. We are happy to inform you on changing your booking to an alternative date. Please note that we accept no liability for hotel or travel bookings that attendees have already made.

When is the sign-up deadline for a training?

Training places will generally be allocated based on the order in which attendees sign up. For this reason, we always recommend booking for your desired date as early as possible.

As long as a coures still has free places, it can be booked.

At what time do the training courses begin and end?

Usually the training courses start at 9:00 am and end at 5:00 pm of the respective local time. The actual course times will be stated in the booking confirmation. Please note that, depending on the training host, there may be a possible time shift between your and the provider's local time. Therefore all local times are provided with the valid time shift to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
