Analysis of engine acoustics with Ansys Workbench and HPC
MAN Diesel & Turbo is making great efforts to improve the acoustic behavior of engines and engine components.

Simulation on behalf of MAN Diesel & Turbo

Sector: Machinery and plant engineeringSpecialist field: Fluid mechanics, Heat Transfer, Structural mechanics

Noise radiation due to vibrating structures can have a significant impact on the comfort of employees and passengers in large diesel engines. In order to reduce this and to speed up the calculation, MAN used Ansys Workbench and HPC for the simulation.

Summary

Task

Large diesel engines, large structures, wide frequency bands and many load cases pose a challenge for simulation solutions.

Solution

The simulation of the sound radiation of vibrating structures usually requires a two-step procedure with a vibration analysis of the structure followed by a subsequent acoustic analysis. By using an Ansys HPC Parametric Pack the calculation time for the sound radiation analysis was reduced by 93 %.

Customer benefits

A reliable workflow was created for the simulation of the acoustic radiation of vibrating structures. In combination with the use of Ansys HPC technology the efficiency of the calculation has been increased considerably.

Project Details

Task

Noise radiation from vibrating structures, for example from large diesel engines, can have a significant impact on the comfort of employees and passengers. MAN Diesel & Turbo is making great efforts to improve the acoustic behavior of engines and engine components, both in terms of structural dynamics and acoustic radiation. Large structures, wide frequency bands and many load cases pose a challenge for simulation solutions.

Solution

The simulation of the sound radiation of vibrating structures usually requires a two-step procedure: A vibration analysis of the structure is combined with a one-way coupling with a subsequent acoustic analysis. In order to obtain a realistic description of the sound pressure level, the surrounding air space must be resolved with sufficient accuracy with respect to the noise frequencies. To speed up the simulation process an automatically repeatable workflow within Ansys Workbench was created. Several models, each for a narrow frequency band, were generated automatically. Depending on the wavelength to be considered, a parametric adjustment of the air volume, as well as the mesh fineness, was carried out. By using the new Ansys HPC Parametric Pack Licensing, 16 jobs with 4 cores each can be run simultaneously, resulting in a considerable increase in the economic efficiency. The calculation time for the sound radiation analysis was reduced by 93 %.

Customer Benefit

A reliable workflow was created for the simulation of the acoustic radiation of vibrating structures. In combination with the  use of Ansys HPC technology this enables the engineers to:

  • make acoustic decisions  in the early design phase of an engine,
  • conduct systematic parameter studies to determine the noise contribution of engine components
  • determine measures to reduce the noise level (e.g. damping layer, ribs, decoupling),
  • save time and money by reducing the number of real prototypes
