Automated modeling and simulation
Using Ansys Workbench the modeling and simulation of GIS systems was automated.

Simulation of high-voltage switchgear during project planning

Sector: Electrical engineering/electronicsSpecialist field: Scalability of simulations, Structural mechanics

Siemens, one of the world's leading manufacturers of gas-insulated high-voltage switchgear (GIS), creates CAD models and performs simulation calculations automatically with Ansys Workbench.

Summary

Task

Automated model creation and simulation according to customer-specific requirements for gas-insulated high voltage switchgear (GIS).

Solution

At an early stage of the plant design, the mechanical strength and foundation loads can already be determined with Ansys Workbench. For the planning of the plants, a modular CAD system is used, which manages all housings and components of the plant in a database.

Customer benefits

The total processing effort was reduced by 90 %, with high quality simulation results already considered  in the early project phases.

Project Details

Task

Siemens, one of the world's leading manufacturers of gas-insulated high-voltage switchgear (GIS), generally manufactures these systems with a customer-specific design. In order to guarantee and document product safety in such customer projects, appropriate strength tests must be carried out. GIS enclosures are under an internal pressure of more than 5 bar and must withstand mechanical loads from heat, wind and increasingly also from earthquakes during normal operation.

Customer Benefit

The automated modelling results in time savings that meet the tight schedule for plant processing. The automatically generated simulation model can be extended by additional boundary conditions and  loads. The total processing effort was reduced by 90 %, and high quality simulation results are already considered  in the early project phases. The automation also leads to standardization, the reduction of errors and a reproducible model structure, which makes an important contribution to quality assurance in strength verification.

Solution

In order to be able to determine the mechanical strength and foundation loads quickly and in high quality right at the beginning of the project planning, an automated model structure based on an intelligent component library was developed for Ansys Workbench. This allows a flexible reaction to customer requirements. A modular CAD system is used for the planning of the plants, which manages all housings and components of the plant in a database. This database was extended by properties relevant for the strength calculation. These include the definition of meshing, the assignment of material properties and the extensive selection of pressure-loaded surfaces. When the CAD structure is set up, a data set for the FEM simulation with Ansys Workbench is automatically generated based on the stored simulation modules. This data set is directly available for the calculation.
