Strength verification of a steam turbine casing according to DIN EN 13445-3
On behalf of M+M Turbinen-Technik, CADFEM provides the necessary strength verifications with regard to load capacity, fatigue, temperature and creep strain.

Simulation on behalf of M+M Turbinen-Technik

Sector: Machinery and plant engineeringSpecialist field: Heat Transfer, Structural mechanics

M+M Turbinen-Technik is a specialist for tailor-made steam turbines, from planning to commissioning and maintenance. In the course of the development of a customized steam turbine, a strength verification of the turbine casing was required.

Summary

Task

Due to an increased pressure and temperature application range, the previous empirical values and the existing analytical approaches to housing design had to be reviewed.

Solution

The analyses were performed using Ansys Mechanical. Based on the investigation of the transient temperature field distributions the cyclical thermo-mechanical stresses could be determined.

Customer benefits

Based on the simulation results, design improvements could be implemented at an early stage. In addition to the verification documentation, the previous housing design was verified and the knowledge regarding the strength verification was expanded.

Project Details

Task

M+M Turbinen-Technik is a specialist for tailor-made steam turbines, from planning to commissioning and maintenance. In the course of the development of a customized steam turbine, a strength verification of the turbine housing was required. Due to an increased pressure and temperature application range, the previous empirical values as well as the existing analytical approaches to the casing design had to be reviewed. According to the specification, the casing should be able to withstand the pressures and temperatures occurring during operation over a service life of 200,000 hours. The lifetime usage due to creep damage as well as thermo-mechanical fatigue during the cyclical start-up and shut-down processes must be taken into account.

Customer Benefit

Based on the simulation results, design improvements could be implemented at an early stage. In addition to the verification documentation, the previous housing design was verified and the knowledge regarding the strength verification was expanded:

  • Identification of relevant verification conditions and development of improvement options even before the production and testing phase.
  • Verifiable strength verification of the system based on current standards and guidelines.
  • Handover of the entire project including accompanying training courses for the independent performance of strength verifications according to DIN EN 13445-3 by M+M Turbinen-Technik.

Solution

The strength verification of the steam turbine casing was carried out in accordance with DIN EN13445-3. In addition to the mandatory load-bearing capacity verification and the fatigue strength verification, creep strength and creep strain verification were also required due to the elevated temperatures. The analyses were performed using Ansys Mechanical. Based on the investigation of the transient temperature field distributions the cyclical thermo-mechanical stresses could be determined. These in turn were the starting point for the final strength evaluation according to the standard.
