Preparation and calculation of an aircraft kitchen
Sector: Aerospace, Consumer goods/durable goodsSpecialist field: Concept design phase simulations, Structural mechanicsAnalysis of a Honeycomb Galley
Summary
Task
Prior to the detailed design of an aircraft galley, the interface loads exerted on the aircraft structure, due to certain accelerations, are calculated.
Solution
The Ansys CAD tool, Design Modeler, is used to create the galley geometry. During this process, the galley is built up on the basis of beam and shell elements simplified for subsequent calculations. The forces acting on the attachment points and deformations on the structure of the galley can be read out and analyzed in a few minutes, particularly by means of the parameters.
Customer benefits
In the future, parameterized FE models will directly accompany the design. This will allow a galley to be designed more quickly and, above all, more easily.
Project Details
Task
The phi Group develops and designs aircraft interior products - especially aircraft galleys - for various manufacturers. Before the galley is designed in detail, the interface loads that are exerted on the aircraft structure, due to certain accelerations, are calculated. Such information is particularly important for the aircraft manufacturer. In addition, the resulting deformation behavior can be directly incorporated into the upcoming detailed design, thus making the product development process more efficient.
Customer Benefit
In addition to the above-mentioned interface loads to the aircraft structure and the calculated stresses and deformation, parameterized FE models will directly accompany future designs. This will allow a galley to be designed more quickly and, above all, more easily. Initial concepts for such a design methodology already exist and are to be directly incorporated into the phi Group's development process in the near future. Weak points that currently only appear in later tests should thus be detected at an early stage.
Solution
The Ansys CAD tool, Design Modeler, is used to create the galley geometry. The galley is constructed using beam and shell elements and simplified for subsequent calculations. Above all, sandwich structures paired with aluminum profiles can be easily represented. The application of accelerations from emergency situations such as flight turbulence, unscheduled take-off, landing and braking maneuvers is carried out in Ansys Workbench Mechanical. The forces acting on the attachment points and deformations on the galley structure can be read out and analyzed in just a few minutes, particularly by means of the parameters. The time saved due to the user-friendly structure of the Workbench compared to Ansys Classic is clearly visible.
