Task

For decades, OASE has been developing high-quality products for the design of gardens, parks and landscapes with a special focus on the medium of water. The illumination of ponds, fountains and water features sets fascinating colorful accents. The corresponding products must therefore function reliably both in dry environments and under water. Consequently, in addition to the earliest possible market presence, the selection of the materials to be used and the expected service life of LED lights, for example, are of decisive importance for the global economic success of the company. Therefore, CADFEM was commissioned to support the design of LED luminaires by means of simulations in order to enable an optimized product design.


Customer Benefit

The simulations carried out by CADFEM made it possible to clearly answer the question of material selection at a very early stage of development. On the basis of the calculation results, those responsible at OASE opted for the desired stainless steel design despite the poorer thermal conductivity of stainless steel compared to bronze. In addition, based on the simulations, OASE was able to carry out further calculations early on with regard to the service life of the product and start marketing activities for the introduction of the new LED light in good time. Overall, the simulation not only served to identify potential sources of error, but also made it possible to locate and eliminate all existing weak points.


Solution

For the LED light shown in Figure 1, where 3 by 3 light sources are placed on a board, stationary and transient thermal simulations were performed with Ansys Workbench. Thereby different aspects were considered. One was which steady-state temperature is reached after which time. Another was the temperature behaviour of the LED light at midsummer temperatures both under water and in the air. The investigations were carried out with stainless steel and bronze housings.
