Consideration of compliance

Hydrodynamic plain bearings combine low wear, high load capacity, small installation space and low sensitivity to impact loads.

This is achieved by the shaft floating on the lubricant in the small lubrication gap and pushing this lubricant into the gap through its own rotation. If the combination of load, lubricant, speed and gap do not fit properly, then mixed friction can occur, leading to wear.

With Tribo-X inside Ansys, this can be analyzed in detail.

Details

When designing plain bearings, rigid bearings are usually the starting point. However, since nowadays increasingly higher operating pressures are used and higher loads are applied, this is no longer guaranteed.

When designing plain bearings, rigid bearings are usually the starting point. However, since nowadays higher and higher operating pressures are used and higher loads are applied, this is no longer guaranteed.

With Tribo-X inside Ansys, we can take compliance into account and can look at the pressure and lubrication gap as they change. This can be both beneficial and detrimental, depending on the stiffnesses present. We will use an example to compare how the Elastic Hydrodynamic calculation differs from the standard assumption of rigid bearings.

Benefits

This webinar will provide you with an insight into how Tribo-X inside Ansys works. See how we can include compliance of structures in the calculation of our journal bearing.
