Description

In this training, we explore the capabilities that Ansys offers for material modeling with the USERMAT interface. While Ansys already includes a vast array of advanced material models like crystal plasticity for turbine blades, there are still uncharted areas crucial for specific application fields. This is where USERMAT comes in, giving engineers the freedom to implement almost any material model.

This training not only provides fundamental knowledge in continuum mechanics but also specialized skills essential for the successful use of the USERMAT interface. These include understanding the interface, practical skills such as solving differential equations and dealing with state variables, deriving material models, and nonlinear equations both numerically and analytically, applying redundancy-free numerics, and exchanging data with other subroutines. Continuous compiling & linking ensures that handling becomes second nature. This training qualifies every participant for the Champions League of mechanics: the implementation of arbitrary, nonlinear, and inelastic material models.

Day 1

01 Handling the USERMAT Interface

  • Determining when you need USERMAT and identifying good reference materials.
  • Recall – Working with MS Visual Studio: compiling, linking, and debugging.
  • Creating a user-friendly material definition in Workbench.
  • White-box testing of USERMAT.
  • Workshop: Getting the provided USERMAT up and running.  

02 Implementation of Linear Material Models

  • Exploring material theory ideas for constitutive laws without state variables.
  • Performance boost with redundancy-free numeric: pitfalls of Mandel & Voigt notation.
  • A crucial component of tensor algebra: the directional derivative.
  • Determining the initial value problem, stresses, and material tangent for linear material models.
  • Workshop: Starting small - implementing Hooke's law as USERMAT.  

03 Implementation of Inelastic Material Models

  • Exploring material theory ideas for constitutive laws with state variables.
  • Solving nonlinear material equations using the Newton-Raphson method.
  • Consistent linearization and analytical stiffness matrix for nonlinear initial value problems.
  • Workshop: Going inelastic – implementing your own viscoelastic material model.  

04 Advanced Aspects of Material Modeling

  • Incremental variational viscoplasticity: theory and algorithmics
  • Extending basic UserMat()-app: Fortran coding, re-linking, and configuration of viscoplasticity model
  • Customizing Engineering Data GUI to support viscoplasticity

When will I receive the final confirmation for my training booking?

Straight after you sign up, an automatic confirmation of receipt will be sent to the email addresses you provided. Once you have successfully verified the data you provided, you will receive your personalized sign-up confirmation, containing further information on course fees, the billing address, etc., by email within two to three working days.  

As soon as the minimum number of attendees has been reached, you will receive a final training confirmation containing further information. If you have booked an on-site training, we recommend that you wait until you have received this final confirmation before booking your travel and accommodation.

If the minimum number of attendees is not reached, we reserve the right to cancel the training seven days before it is due to start at the latest. We are happy to inform you on changing your booking to an alternative date. Please note that we accept no liability for hotel or travel bookings that attendees have already made.

When is the sign-up deadline for a training?

Training places will generally be allocated based on the order in which attendees sign up. For this reason, we always recommend booking for your desired date as early as possible.

As long as a coures still has free places, it can be booked.

At what time do the training courses begin and end?

Usually the training courses start at 9:00 am and end at 5:00 pm of the respective local time. The actual course times will be stated in the booking confirmation. Please note that, depending on the training host, there may be a possible time shift between your and the provider's local time. Therefore all local times are provided with the valid time shift to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
