High performance computing from the "socket”
Hardware as a Service
High Performance Computing in the Cloud
The wide range of simulation tasks also requires the right hardware. Often, things can't go fast enough: at peak times or in daily work. Large models, many variants and other challenges push your own hardware to its limits. Our cloud solutions open up new possibilities by providing hardware resources that can be used immediately and flexibly at any time. HPC computing power for CAE simulation with Ansys and complementary tools. Ready to use and seamlessly applicable.
Why use hardware in the cloud?
CADFEM and its partners, Ansys and AWS, offer cloud services which allow you to access the exact HPC computing power you need at any time. Many core products are supported by Ansys Cloud or, in the case of AWS Cloud, also by ROCKY or Motor-CAD. Access is convenient either directly from the supported Ansys application or via remote graphics for 3D interactive work.
Convenient and available at any time - no more hardware limits.
Pre-configured
All our cloud services are equipped with the latest Ansys versions and can be used immediately.
Transparent
Full cost control. Pay for what you use. Project-related costs vs. fixed costs.
Fast
More and faster calculations. Cover peak loads. Shorten project times.
Available cloud solutions
Which cloud solution is best for you? Depending on your application profile, you can choose between two offerings to remove your hardware limitations and advance your simulation tasks. Either the benefits of Ansys Cloud with workflow integrated in the application and a common billing system via Elastic Licensing. The CADFEM Cloud team will be happy to support you in your choice.
Ansys Cloud
Ansys Cloud
Use extensive HPC capabilities directly from Ansys applications. With Ansys Elastic Licensing as a common billing system.
- Based on Microsoft® Azure™, Ansys has created a cloud solution with outstanding features: straightforward application, fast availability, high performance and support for almost all Ansys solvers. And all this at the push of a button – whenever and wherever needed.
- Another key point is the common billing system. With Ansys Elastic Licensing, you have complete flexibility for hardware/cloud and license usage. Because, in addition to your local licenses, you can call up additional licenses. Combine them as you like and get exactly the number you need for your cloud-based simulation work.
- Ansys Cloud is a worldwide service with secured data centers (in Europe: Dublin and Amsterdam).
Hardware as a Service by CADFEM
Professional guidance and support for you
With our services, you will have a smooth start with cloud services.
- Technical support from our IT experts is included when using Hardware as a Service and easily accessible through our CADFEM Support. This gives you the security you need for all your cloud-based simulation work.
- Commissioning: We help you set up the appropriate cloud solution. You will receive a briefing on how to use the portals, we will show you how to start simulation tasks and how to work efficiently with the cloud.
- Account management and monitoring: After setting up the account, the account manager receives the login data for the password-protected license and cloud portal. This provides you with an overview of your usage at any time and allows you to track the history. Automatic e-mail notifications inform you, for example, when an account limit is exceeded.

When it comes to having access to simulation specialists on short notice, computation service providers such as ITB are the right choice. But even these have only limited capacities and reach their limits when it comes to more extensive projects or when large computing capacities are required.
That's why ITB used CADFEM Engineering Cloud hardware on a project for Lufthansa Technik AG (LHT).

We now believe that the new solution “Amazon Web Services provided by CADFEM” will be a sensible way of responding to bottlenecks as soon as our own computing power becomes scarce in future projects.
- Every user can access external hardware at short notice and temporarily.
- Both handling and setting up of instances are easy and intuitive.
- The range of different performance sizes (4, 16 and more cores) is perfectly adequate for our requirements at present.
I’m already looking forward to our next projects when things get really hectic and our available computers are no longer sufficient.

Everything works very simply
- Setup: Setup is very intuitive via the eCADFEM website. Three different high-performance machines (4 to 16 cores) were available to choose from for the test. The selected machine is initialized at the push of a button and is available after a few minutes. Access is either via NICE DCV for the machines with 3D graphics (not tested), or via remote desktop.
- Data transfer: Data transfer is done via drag and drop, selected local directories can be directly integrated on the virtual desktop. The data is transferred in encrypted form; the transfer speed is a few MB/s, so a project including solution and evaluation files can be transferred in an acceptable amount of time (2 GB upload takes about half an hour).
- Operation: All Ansys products available via eCADFEM are already installed on the machines and can be started straight away. Licenses and instances are settled centrally and clearly using the eCADFEM account.
Summary
The machines, including the installations of Ansys and ROCKY, are already preconfigured, so that the calculation can be started immediately after activation and download of the geometry. The constant availability meant that the instances could also be started in the middle of the night or on weekends if required.
Both the Ansys licenses and AWS instances are invoiced centrally and clearly using the eCADFEM portal; use of the hardware requires a separate contingent.

The new “Hardware as a Service” service from CADFEM is the perfect option for having flexible computational capacities to be able to solve even big FE models quickly. Especially in combination with eCADFEM license models, “Hardware as a Service” allows flexible working without having to maintain a powerful local computer.

During the test phase of the AWS instances’ significant advantages justifying use of this technology were found when carrying out simulations:
- A wide selection of available machines, so configuration with ideal value for money can be chosen to suit the application.
- Quick and convenient provision of the AWS instance.
- Calculations on AWS instances can be easily combined with calculations on the local PC; the transition is smooth due to the simple data transfer.
- The burden on the local PC is relieved since the calculation is outsourced to the AWS instance. The local PC is not “locked” or slowed down by the simulation process, which creates free space.
